Process audit before SAP S/4HANA migration: Don't carry old mess into a new system
Importing dirty data into S/4HANA just replicates legacy friction faster. Clean up master data and open transactions before consultants write the technical blueprint.

The hidden cost of rushing migration
Too many companies treat S/4HANA migration simply as a database swap or hardware upgrade. If master data in your legacy ECC environment is disorganized, the new setup will run into immediate bottlenecks after go-live.
S/4HANA enforces tighter rules, particularly the Business Partner (BP) model that consolidates vendors and customers. Forcing a cutover without prior cleanup leads to constant validation errors.
Three areas that need cleanup first
Start with vendor and customer master data: remove duplicates, verify tax identifiers, and confirm banking records. Next, review material masters to standardize units of measure and flag obsolete part numbers.
Finally, close out open transaction backlogs. Lingering purchase orders or unsettled open billings from past years should be closed in ECC before data extraction begins.
Involve business owners, not just IT
IT teams manage data extraction scripts, but only warehouse, procurement, and accounting teams know which suppliers are active and which parts are discontinued.
Form a cross-functional data review team before project kick-off. Cleaning data upfront is far cheaper than hiring emergency consultants to fix corrupt records post-launch.
