When does a business need custom ABAP?
Custom ABAP is not always the first answer. It makes sense when the business need is clear, the impact is measurable, and standard SAP no longer covers the process gap.

Do not start with coding
Requests for reports, forms, interfaces, or enhancements should begin with a business question: what decision will this support, which process will become faster, or what risk will be reduced?
If the need is still unclear, custom development can turn into unnecessary maintenance work.
Signs that custom ABAP makes sense
Custom ABAP is usually appropriate for audit requirements, local document formats, system integrations, data migration, or operational reporting that standard SAP does not cover.
The scope still needs to be sharp: which fields are needed, where the data comes from, who will use it, and how the output will be validated.
Maintenance should be considered early
A good ABAP program does more than pass UAT. It should be traceable, technically documented, and designed so future upgrades or support work do not become harder.
